Coffee Pods
Re-imagined.
Pod Nation was created to fill the need of the market of a 100% environmentally friendly brand, from the material of the coffee capsules to the material of the outside packaging - without compromising the coffee quality.
The primary need to create this packaging design comes from analysing the current market and realising that most packages available don’t offer a meaningful experience. In addition, it seems that few competitors care about the sustainability and impact of coffee pods and packaging waste in the world. Usually, a consumer opens the coffee pods box and stores them in a different container, not using the package and going straight to the bin. Coffee pods are making global headlines in terms of their negative environmental impact – millions of aluminium and plastic coffee pods are poured into landfill every day.
The final concept is an eco-friendly package that combines both usability and functionality. It consists of a cylindrical tube with a diameter of 42mm and is tall enough to keep 10 pods on top of each other. It has a ‘window’ opening the size of one pod at the bottom of the tube and is covered with a peel-off sticker. Once the sticker is removed, the consumer can pick one pod at a time, and the next one drops down. The tube also can be opened through a lid at the top to give the consumer the choice of being refilled e reused.
To fit PodNation’s principle of sustainability, the outside packaging is made of a new-to-the-market biodegradable material known as d2w BioLiners, which when correctly disposed of after use, will begin to break down within 3 months. All the labels (front label, peel-off sticker and the top and bottom label) are certified compostable adhesives - made of sugarcane waste fibres. These aspects are the main advantages compared to the competitors and what they offer. And not least important, the capsules are also made of compostable and biodegradable material.
